About
First off, you should know that I don’t write about myself in the 3rd person because I’m not a monster… Or Rickey Henderson or Reggie Jackson, who weren’t monsters at all, but so cool they could get away with it.
Anyway, I have a BA in English and Creative Writing and have published poetry. I also covered the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, for my college newspaper. They wouldn’t give press passes to student newspapers, so I couldn’t get into the convention, which would have been pretty cool, and instead covered the protests going on outside—where I was zip-tied and detained.
There’s video of it. You can see it on YouTube. Ask me about it and I’ll send you the link. Anyway, they let me go once they determined I was actually a journalist. Good thing, too. Tear gas leaves a stink in the air.
I was also a pizza driver for 5 years during college and have worked at about a dozen restaurants, from bus and dish to delivery driver to bartender to server to line cook and sushi chef trainee. I know restaurants.
Why yes indeed, that shirt does say Gary Clark Jr on it. Good catch, you fan of the blues.
I also taught English in Taiwan. And one day, a while after I got back from this beautiful island, I needed a job, and had two interviews on the same day. One was to work in the backroom at Target, and the other was to be a content writer at a place called an SEO agency, whatever the fuck that was. But it ended up being just two dudes doing something I didn’t know about on the internet.
Target turned me down, but the SEO place thought I was cool enough—to be honest I think I was their only interview, so small sample size.
From there I wrote. Websites. Geo pages. Hundreds, probably thousands of blogs. I learned to interview clients, find out what made them tick, and why their customers bought from them. I learned to research customer voice and write in brand voices. Later on, I also managed a team of writers and edited their work.
And now I run my own writing company, which is pretty much just me I make good company. And I write for you, or myself, and sometimes both at the same time.
When I say I’m writer, what I mean is you get it all. You get more ideas than you contracted for. You get dedicated thinking time. You get solid work. Because if I’m not putting words on the page, then I’m not a writer. Doing the work, figuring it out, is something I really enjoy. And you’ll be better off for it.
Other stuff
Otherwise, if you want to know more about me, that’s wild, but here we go. I’m from Minnesota and live in Taiwan these days. I met my wife here at a bar. We lived in the US for about 8 years and then moved back here so our kids could become bilingual and get to know her side of the family too. It’s good. I like it.
But the only relevance for you that I live in Taiwan is that it’ll probably be evening or night time when we talk. Or early morning. Or afternoon if you live in Europe or the UK.
And I’ll be talking from the future. Unless you’re in New Zealand, Australia, or Japan. Then you’ll be in the future. Damn. You know what, never mind all that.
If I had it my way, I’d wake up every morning and walk down the mountain to go surfing. Then walk back up and read and write and research and edit the rest of the morning and into the afternoon. Then go to one of my kids’ baseball games or swimming lessons or what have you, and then make some dinner. Throw some pottery or do some woodworking in the evening and squeeze client calls around all that. Then do it all again the next day. Maybe walk down to a bar on the weekend and BS for a few hours. Or play some board games. You know. That sounds good.
But I live amongst rice paddies on the coastal plains and have two wild boys, so it’s unlikely that all of that will happen anytime soon. But a guy can dream.
Anyway, contract for some copy or sign up for my email list down below. If you want. Cool either way.
Also, my oldest thinks it’s vitally important that I let you know I’m good at swimming. So, yeah.
“Nate was very easy to work with good communication skills and quick turnaround with edits and changes. I was probably a difficult client and he took it all in stride while delivering a polished result that looks good on my website. I would recommend Nate Tyler Writing Company to anyone needing clear, concise copy.”
